Health
As with nearly all dog breeds, there are medical
problems. Some to lesser degree,
some have a very long list, but they all have
some kind of problem or problems.
The Norwegian Lundehund has a protein absorption
issue called IL or PLE.
There is a great deal of misinformation concerning
a protein absorption issue
with the breed. Some call it "Lundehund Syndrome",
but that is not accurate.
There are at least seven other breeds known
to have this same protein problem.
Research is on going in our breed as well
as for the other breeds to find answers that
will give our owners more ideas on how to
better manage the problem if it arises, until
the exact cause and/or cure is found. All
Lundehunds have a tendency towards having
it although some may never show the symptoms
or have any actual problems with
it. It can be treated medically and with diet.
If you have been to another club's website
and read the "horror" stories concerning
this issue, PLEASE remember that the members
of that site do not want others to
share this special breed, they are willing
to publish whatever derogatory information they
can in order to limit the number of people
interested in this mystical and wonderful dog.
Do not allow their information to scare you
away from considering owning this breed.
Any reputable Lundehund breeder will openly
discuss this issue with you in detail. If they
do not bring it up, you the potential buyer,
bring it up. It they appear to skirt or evade the
issue, beware. Good breeders want to get their
puppies or adults into the best home for
that animal. That can only happen when there
is honesty and information openly
departed to prospective owners.
